Aliwal Urban Art Festival (#ALIWALUAF2019) hits the streets once again on 19 January 2019, from 4pm till late, with doses of subcultures and urban art. Organised by Aliwal Arts Centre and held as part of Singapore Art Week, the sixth edition brings together artists, musicians, performers and enthusiasts of the street art scene, as well as showcases new and lesser-known subcultures in Singapore and around the world.
From street to graphic, skateboarding to dance battles, there’s something cool for everyone! At the one-day affair, Kult Studio and Gallery will launch their new exhibition, A Sign of the Times, at the Aliwal Courtyard which runs till 4 February 2019. As the second volume of their From the Streets of Singapore series, the exhibition features the works of 45 creatives from the Singapore urban creative community who re-interpret instructional metal signs commonly seen on the streets, in response to social norms and modern times.
Serving up live music acts throughout the evening, #AliwalUAF19 will feature an eclectic mix of independent bands across the genres of R&B, pop, electronica and math-rock at the Aliwal Street Carpark Stage. Curated by SGMUSO, this year’s lineup includes Izat Ibrahim, hauste, Sun Eater, Astronauts, as well as a Malaysian act, Froya. The Closing Party, curated by InvasionSG, is sure to get festival-goers dancing and throwing shapes to tunes by Writers’ Block, Hybreed Society and Solid Gold at the Multi-purpose Hall.
Discover new worlds and contemporary Urban Art movements with the street art collective RSCLS. Spearheading the segment, the talented street artist collective will host a walking tour that trods the unbeaten path in Kampong Glam to discover works of all sizes by international and Singapore street art artists. Titled D’Tour, participants will wind through the iconic streets and alleys to discover fascinating street art and massive murals which may be hiding in plain sight or just around the corners. Aliwal Street will go carfree from 12pm to support live graffiti painting demonstrations. Another highlight is the ART IN THE STREETS Pop-Up Exhibition at BlackBook Studios at the Sultan Gate Arts Village, with an extensive display of works by 26 street artists.
Groove to tunes by DJ G.Mak! and pick up some nifty dance moves at the Multi-purpose Hall. Curated by dt, THE REAL DEAL Showcase Ed.01 traces the roots of street dance in a showcase featuring nine crews from the Hip-Hop dance scene — past, present as well as those currently on hiatus. Some of Singapore’s best street dancers will battle and set the stage ablaze in Radikal Forze Jam 2019 SG Qualifiers, as teams vie in knockout rounds for a spot in the main event in March.
Nimble-fingered art enthusiasts can register for the ticketed Silversmithing Workshop by RSCLS and Yogyakarta artist SWEDA who designs custom rings and jewellery with an international following. Participants will learn about Singapore’s vanishing trade of silversmithing and be guided through traditional process of silver pendant-making. A fee of $120 per participant is required, and participants can register in advance at aliwalartscentre.sg.
Pick up a skill or learn more about Urban Sports in a series of workshops and showcases that are available for kids and adults alike. Join public try-outs to fly a drone through an obstacle course, or witness drone racers strut their skills in a cage filled with obstacle courses as part of the Drone in the Arts activities at Sultan Gate Street. Enjoy high-octane performances and jaw-dropping tricks as highly-skilled skateboarders navigate a street arena with different difficulty levels. SkateSG and Vans will host Skate-mini clinics for first-timers.
Formed as breakaways from rigid societies and communal norms, subcultures have profound influence on fashion and lifestyle choices. The Streetwear and Art Market, held at the Aliwal Street Carpark will feature clothing apparels and handcrafted products by Singapore’s independent artists. Street Food & Beverage will keep your hunger pangs at bar with a specially curated range of vendors.
