Singapore-based music collective re:sound, the first professional chamber orchestra in the country, is set to perform a new concert this July. Titled Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, the collective, comprising conservatory-trained professionals and some of Singapore’s most talented and dedicated musicians, will be performing songs such as Vivaldi’s Sinfonia to La Senna Festeggiante RV117, Haydn’s Symphony no.104 in D major, and Prokofiev’s Symphony no.1 in D major (“Classical”).
The concert takes its name from the idea of how great art inspires future generations, and will be guest led by Pavlo Beznosiuk, one of Europe’s most respected Baroque violinists. Beznosiuk returns after his triumphant debut last year, to explore the ways in which composers down the ages have relied on their forebears’ creations for inspiration.
Says Beznosiuk: “I’m really looking forward to it, I had a great time last year working with re:Sound’s musicians and I anticipate that the rapport we built in that project can be developed further in this. I’m particularly happy that the programme is rather diverse. When you get known for one thing (“historical” performance in my case) you’re at serious risk of being “pigeon-holed” as a musician and it’s very frustrating. I have very eclectic tastes in music and it’s a total joy to be engaging with Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev for this concert.”
The collective will also be joined by Chinese Australian cello virtuoso Qin Li-Wei as a guest soloist, who will, together with re:sound, crown the evening with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Rococo’ variations. Says Li-Wei: ” I feel extremely excited in joining re:Sound. I know re:Sound is formed by a majority Singaporean professional musicians and I know many of them. Some of them are alumnus of Yong Siew Toh (YST), and I know some of them personally. So making music and working with them is very exciting and I’m looking forward very much to working with them. I think music is about sharing experiences and I do share many musical and personal journeys with many of the musicians in re:Sound, as well as many musical values, so I feel very excited and grateful for the kind invitation.”
Standing On The Shoulders of Giants plays on 5th July 2019 at the Victoria Concert Hall. Tickets available from SISTIC
