As Singapore’s most acclaimed Chinese chamber music ensemble, Ding Yi starts off 2020 on an auspicious note with a new edition of their annual Happy Chinese New Year Concert. Playing on 8th February at the China Cultural Centre, the concert will be conducted by Ding Yi Assistant Conductor Wong De Li, Dedric, and feature a special appearance from local singer-songwriter Nathan Hartono, who rose to fame in the Chinese music scene after finishing runner-up in the very first season of Chinese music reality television show Sing! China.
Ding Yi percussionist Derek Koh Wen Jun, a graduate of the prestigious Mannes School of Music, will be premiering and performing to his own composition specially commissioned for the concert, titled Flushing Chinatown 《法拉盛华埠》. New Ding Yi huqin musician Chia Wan Hua will also be debuting her first solo performance with the ensemble, with Wang Dan Hong’s Strings of Lingnan 《弦意岭南》. Other familiar tunes that the ensemble will be playing during the concert include Law Kin Pong’s Another Plum Blossom 《梅花新弄》and Wang Chenwei’s Cantonese Medley《粤舞升平》.
Since the launch of the Happy Chinese New Year concert series in collaboration with China Cultural Centre in 2016, Ding Yi has continued to refresh the formula with new ways of presenting Chinese classical music using challenging new interpretations. With Nathan Hartono as vocalist, fans of the pop singer will see a new side to him as he makes this debut as the first time performing live with Chinese chamber music.
