Food For Thought: New Courier Service Pickupp Arrives On The Scene, Partners Digital Shilin To Support Up to 100 F&B Vendors On Their Platform

In response to today’s pandemic and the long-drawn closure of entertainment activities in Singapore, the second edition of the Shilin Singapore Night Market has been digitised completely to allow Singaporeans to experience the festival from the comfort of their homes.

Having already begun last weekend, the festival continues over this weekend (19th to 21st June), and is supported by local courier service and logistics company Pickupp to fulfil their food orders, ranging from Taiwanese food to fusion dishes.

Pickupp launched their ecommerce platform, Shop On Pickupp earlier this year. While there are already a number of existing retailers on the platform such as Matchaya and Wu Pao Chun (Breadtalk Pte Ltd), this event, which will host up to 100 F&B vendors, showcases the dynamic nature of Shop On Pickupp and its ability to cater to different large-scale events based on clients’ needs. With this event, consumers are directed to a Shilin-specific category customised on the platform, listing only vendors from the event.

“This is the first time that a traditionally brick-and-mortar big-scale event has been moved entirely online. As a technology-driven company, we want to be the pioneers in supporting such events as we can expect a potential boost in the digitisation of events in the near future. This digital festival format is a highly creative and refreshing concept during this period of social restrictions, which also fits with Pickupp’s objective of always finding innovative ways to add value for our users.”, says Lee Chee Meng, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Pickupp. “Moreover, the logistical challenge of ensuring that the deliveries for this event run smoothly is a litmus test of our capabilities, one in which we are very excited to take on.”

Most of the F&B vendors listed will be offering Shilin Singapore-exclusive menu items, where customers can expect to tuck into umami bowls of truffle lu ro fan from D’bun, or snack on Taiwanese pastries from Chia Te Bakery and refreshing bubble teas by Playmade. Other highlights include East-meets-West casual dining outfit The Masses’ Truffle Roast Pork Buns as well as Korean-American joint Egg Stop’s spicy Mala Chicken Sandwich.

As a logistics company, Pickupp’s core competency lies in its delivery services. Shop On Pickupp was built by leveraging on this expertise, where the aim is to offer users not just a seamless shopping experience, but also the ability to have greater flexibility over the last-mile delivery of their purchases. As a courier service, Pickupp allows customers to schedule your own delivery date and time slot function. Depending on a store’s capacity, there are a range of delivery options. The service also offers on-demand tracking capability of the delivery agent’s whereabouts and access to their contact number, as well as personalized messaging.

In the face of today’s pandemic, where the foreseeable future will lead to more physical businesses transitioning online and a steady need for deliveries, Pickupp’s affordable services can be a sustainable option for many local retailers who do not have the necessary e-commerce and delivery infrastructure to adapt online. By offering affordable islandwide deliveries, free listing fees, and a seamless set up process, businesses can utilise the platform to earn revenue at minimal cost.

In testing out PickUpp firsthand, we ordered the Chargrilled Ribeye Set and Braised Pork Belly (Loh Bah) Set from The 1925 Brewing Co., with these offers available as part of Digital Shilin 2020.

While the service is certainly still in its infancy, with certain limitations, these are likely teething issues that will be sorted out given more time to develop and put down its roots in Singapore.

Phase 1 may have ended, but with how COVID-19 has changed the world, it seems likely we’ll be relying on deliveries and takeaways as we continue to work from home for some time to come, with PickUpp adding on to the ever-growing number of options available to us.
