This September, celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, Esplanade-style, as Moonfest returns this year – online! Now in its 16th edition, check out a variety of free-to-access digital programmes celebrating traditional art forms such as xiqu, dance, folk songs, puppetry, poetry and crosstalk, and even a special virtual edition of the annual Lantern Walkabout too!

Nam Hwa Opera’s Teochew Opera Classics

Available on Esplanade Offstage and Huayi’s Facebook page from 25th September to 4th October, look out for performances streamed live from the Esplanade Concourse, as well as five videos filmed at various performing venues at Esplanade. These include Teochew Opera by Nam Hwa Opera, folk songs by Marcus Chin, crosstalk by Johnny Ng and Yong Ser Bin, Chinese dance by Li Ruimin and Zheng Long, as well as poetry and music performance by Lee Yong Tick.

Paper Monkey Theatre’s The Magic Paintbrush

Be sure to also check out the archival footage of popular Northern Shaanxi folk singer Wang Er Ni’s 2013 concert and a puppetry performance of The Magic Paintbrush (2017) by Paper Monkey Theatre, perfect for all the family, and both having been performed at previous editions of Moonfest.

Make your own smartphone filter with Yong Kah Kin

Even with the physical distance put between the Esplanade and audiences, feel connected and bond over a number of DIY craft workshops, including making your own smartphone filter, making healthy osmanthus flower and longan jelly mooncakes, discover the beauty of the Cantonese dialect, or even awaken the Ip Man inside you by learning how to do Wing Chun, in Moonfest’s lineup of family-friendly activities.

And of course, what’s an Esplanade Moonfest without their annual Lantern Walkabout? Get your lantern and smartphone ready, and join them from the comfort of your home as you ‘stroll’ along the Esplanade Waterfront virtually, while playing interactive games and tour the Esplanade, before finishing off with digital fireworks at the end. So grab your mooncakes and tea, plonk yourself in front of a screen, and get ready to celebrate the Esplanade’s Moonfest online with the whole family this September.

Moonfest 2020 takes place from 25th September to 4th October 2020 online. For more information, visit their website here
