As theatre begins to reopen, the graduating students of Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI) will finally get an opportunity to perform to a live audience this November. Playing at the Esplanade Theatre Studio and livestreamed on Zoom, this year’s graduating batch of students will be performing FIVE, an intimate and evocative hybrid piece about isolation that was designed to cater to both online and on-site audiences.
Directed by Drama Box Artistic Director Kok Heng Leun, and created in collaboration with a creative team of Singapore’s leading artists, FIVE weaves together the cast’s original works and stories into a hybrid performance that explores solitude and separation and asks how does it feel to be cut off from regular human contact? What happens to a mind and body which can only connect with others virtually? What does it mean to be an artist in this “new” world?
FIVE is devised with ITI’s graduating class of 2020, in collaboration with a creative team of Singapore’s leading artists, including Genevieve Peck (video and lighting design), Guo Ningru (sound design), Tan Wei Ting (film direction) and Lim Chin Huat (costume coordination). Says director Kok Heng Leun: “You are seeing five actors with their heart and soul, telling stories that are very closely linked to their lives and who they are.”
FIVE runs from 12th to 14th November. 2020 at the Esplanade Theatre Studio and online. Tickets available from Peatix
