KUALA LUMPUR – After conquering new ground last month with KLoud Fest, Malaysia’s first digital arts festival, Liver & Lung returns this April with an intimate, concert version of their award winning adaptation of Yasmin Ahmad’s iconic film: Sepet The Musical.
This will be Malaysia’s first live musical since the bans on live performances have been lifted. Sepet The Musical In Concert will feature all of the songs from the musical, including audience-favourites like Jauh and Sayangku. The concert will also include some special tracks that didn’t make the final cut of the show.
“Directing Sepet The Musical was a life-changing experience,” said Shafeeq Shajahan, co-founder of Liver & Lung and recent recipient of the Boh Cameronian Arts Award for Best Direction in Musical Theatre. “Jason and Orked’s story needs to be told over and over again. Whenever we put on Sepet The Musical, audiences fall in love with the characters and Yasmin Ahmad’s story again. It really is magic on stage.”
Liver & Lung have been busy developing the studio album of Sepet The Musical. Fans of both the film and the musical have constantly been requesting for the musical’s soundtrack since the production first launched and, with the help of Cendana and MyCreative Ventures, the dream is finally materialising.
On the 10th of April, Liver & Lung will be releasing their first singles from the album, Another Careless Day and Sayangku, both romantic songs from the production featuring both Jason and Orked. The concert is in celebration of this.
“We wanted to go bigger and better!” says Badrish, co-composer of Sepet The Musical. “We believe in the music and we want to treat our fans with an album that captures the magic of the production. Expect big sounds, haunting melodies and a love letter to Malaysia.”
Liver & Lung have been working hard to ensure necessary SOP sanctions are in place for the performance. “We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable evening,” explains Hannah Shields, co-founder of Liver & Lung. “Of course, we’ll be adding some Liver & Lung magic to the social distancing protocols so they feel part of the overall experience. Who knows, Jason could be checking your temperature on your way into the venue?”
With a run time of 1 hours 15 minutes, Sepet The Musical in Concert stars Joshua Gui and Badrika Bahadur as Jason and Orked respectively. The performance will also feature Badrish and Shafeeq Shajahan, co-composers of the score. Irena Taib of The Impatient Sisters-fame, who also produced the studio album, will play the guitar and Mariamlisa will play the cello.
“We encourage everyone who comes to see ‘Sepet The Musical’ to dress in their best Sepet-inspired attire (cotton baju kurungs). It’s going to be a fun, moving and heartfelt evening,” declared Shafeeq.
Sepet The Musical In Concert plays on 10th April 2021 at Asterik Anak Seni Studio (E-2-07, Blok E Pusat Komersil Parklane, Jalan SS 7/26, 47301). Tickets available from Peatix
