Want to attend a feast for the senses? This November, get ready as Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) proudly presents a unique dinner theatre experience, with Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding.

Directed by Singapore icon and ‘Mad Chinaman’ Dick Lee (Forbidden City – Portrait of an Empress and Fried Rice Paradise), with a script by Jo Tan, Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding will be a unique site-specific pop-up restaurant at One Farrer Hotel, featuring a four-course culinary experience curated by Michelin Star Chef Manjunath Mural, who is the co-owner of ADDA Singapore.

Not only will visitors get to enjoy a delicious meal, but enjoy a main course of theatre, starring veteran actress Koh Chieng Mun as Por Por. Set during a wedding celebration hosted by the Chan family, you’ll find a rather unusual set of circumstance. 70 year-old matriarch, Por Por, happens to be the bride, and nobody has met the groom, or even knows who he is. With Por Por declaring he will only be revealed at the wedding dinner itself, guests are both excited and concerned it may all be one big scam.

It’s up to Por Por’s righteous insurance agent son, Francis, his hapless civil servant wife, Rainy, and their precocious teen, Prudentia, to save the whole family from possible disgrace… unless her friends – restauranteur Ajeet, KTV king Adam and polymath helper Flordeliza – can keep Por Por’s plan on track. Come eat, drink, and be a guest as Por Por is to be married (or not)… it’s the wedding celebration of the year!

SRT is no stranger to site-specific theatre, being the presenter of Shakespeare in the Park and productions like Caught (2019) and C-O-N-T-A-C-T (2022). And even before that, SRT was the first producer of dinner theatre in Singapore with Ah Kong’s Birthday Party in 1998. The iconic play remains the longest running local stage production over a course of six months, and was co-created by Dick Lee.

“Ah Kong’s Birthday Party was a very successful and unique theatrical experience which was the very first immersive production in Singapore which also included food. The combination of theatre and cuisine makes for a great night out which I’m happy to revive with this brand new show,” says Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding director Dick Lee.

Co-starring Jo Tan, Edward Choy, Bridget Fernandez, Ric Liu, Tiara Yap and Chacko Vadaketh, guests can look forward to both entertainment and good food, with the promise of some tasty ‘Asian-Indian gastronomy’ in a four-course meal that includes options for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Combining Singaporeans’ love for great food with SRT’s even greater love for good storytelling, get ready for the surprise of the year, with Por Por’s Big Fat Surprise Wedding coming this November.
