A karaoke bar. A birthday meltdown. A ghostly mother who won’t stay dead. Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) is proud to present the Singapore premiere of Congratulations, Get Rich!, a bold and hilarious new play written by and starring Singaporean-Australian artist Merlynn Tong.

In a first of its kind co-production between Sydney Theatre Company, La Boite Theatre in Brisbane and SRT, this genre-bending comedy opens at Drama Centre Theatre on 29 Oct 2025, promising a night of laugh-out-loud chaos, heartfelt revelations, and 90s karaoke bangers. Set in a Singaporean karaoke bar, the story follows Mandy, who’s trying to save her failing business on the night of her 38th birthday. But when two surprise guests appear – including her long-dead mother – family secrets erupt, the past collides with the present, and things take a wildly unexpected turn.

Tong draws from her own childhood growing up in a family-run karaoke bar in Singapore. The result is a story that’s personal, messy, and deeply funny – blending the real and the surreal in a way that audiences will instantly recognise. “I have based these characters on very real people, but I have also allowed my imagination to run wild,” says Tong. “Our audience will get to meet a suite of characters who feel authentic and real but are also part of a narrative that is outrageous, fun and phenomenal.”

Directed by Courtney Stewart, Artistic Director of La Boite Theatre, the production stars a powerhouse cast from across the region: Merlynn Tong, Seong Hui Xuan (Singapore), Kimie Tsukakoshi (Sydney), and Zac Boulton (Brisbane). The team also features Singaporean lighting designer Gabriel Chan, whose work shapes the production’s surreal and atmospheric world.

Congratulations, Get Rich! is an international co-production between Singapore Repertory Theatre, La Boite Theatre (Brisbane) and Sydney Theatre Company, continuing SRT’s commitment to bold new voices and cross-cultural storytelling.
