When Elle Woods steps into Harvard Law, she’s armed not just with pink heels and impeccable hair, but with an unshakeable belief in herself, and a community of women who have her back. This July, that spirit of confidence and camaraderie returns to Singapore in a glossy, contemporary new production of Legally Blonde – The Musical, led by one of our country’s most accomplished theatre exports.
Singapore Repertory Theatre has announced that West End star Nathania Ong will take on the iconic role of Elle Woods, marking a meaningful homecoming for the performer whose career has taken her from Singapore to the world’s biggest musical stages. Best known for her acclaimed turns as Éponine in Les Misérables and Eliza Hamilton in Hamilton on the West End, Ong is among a rare group of Singaporean artists who have fronted major global productions. Now, she’s bringing that international experience back home, and into a pair of very pink shoes.
For Ong, the return is deeply personal. While she is now based in London, Singapore remains home in every sense. “Being able to perform such a challenging role here feels especially meaningful,” she shares. “My family and friends don’t often get the chance to see my work, and this allows them to witness my growth and the journey I’ve had as an actress.”
First premiering in 2007, Legally Blonde – The Musical has long been loved for its pop energy, instantly recognisable score, and feel-good humour. Songs like Omigod You Guys and So Much Better power a story that looks light on the surface, but has always carried deeper themes about ambition, perception, and what it means to be underestimated. At its heart, it’s a celebration of self-belief, and of sisterhood in all its forms.
SRT’s new production leans firmly into those ideas, approaching the musical through a modern lens that places Elle’s intelligence and agency front and centre. While retaining the original American setting, the show is performed by a predominantly Asian cast, offering a fresh cultural dynamic that feels both current and resonant.
The visual world of the production is also getting a contemporary update. Drawing inspiration from K-pop fashion and performance culture, the design layers bold silhouettes and high-impact styling onto the show’s already iconic aesthetic. Think glossy, fashion-forward, and unapologetically pop, a Legally Blonde that feels plugged into today’s culture rather than framed as nostalgia.
“This isn’t Legally Blonde as nostalgia,” says Gaurav Kripalani, Artistic Director of Singapore Repertory Theatre. “It’s a story about perception, ambition, and what it means to be underestimated. Those are themes we’re always drawn to, and casting Nathania allows us to tell this story with real authority and confidence.”
Director Kate Golledge echoes that focus, steering the production away from caricature and towards emotional truth. “What I’m most interested in revealing about Elle is her emotional intelligence and strategy,” she explains. “She embodies that Brené Brown idea of leadership — soft front, strong spine. Elle doesn’t win by changing herself; she wins by trusting who she already is. That idea resonates strongly with me, and it’s exactly the kind of leadership – and the kind of story – I’m excited to put on stage right now.”
That interpretation resonates strongly with Ong, particularly within a majority Asian cast. “Performing this role in Singapore means a great deal to me,” she says. “While I spend a lot of time working in London, Singapore is home — it’s where I grew up and where most of my family still lives. Being able to take on such a challenging role here feels especially meaningful because it allows my family and friends, who don’t often get the chance to see my work, to witness my growth and the journey I’ve had as an actress.”
“Playing Elle Woods within a predominantly Asian cast is truly the cherry on top. Reimagining the story in a majority Asian context brings a fresh dynamic to the role and highlights how themes like resilience, self-belief, and staying true to yourself resonate just as powerfully outside of its original Western setting.”
