There are countless musicals about chasing your dreams. Few stop to ask what those dreams might ultimately cost. This July, Be A Star arrives at the SOTA Drama Theatre with a story that feels especially relevant in an age of viral fame, personal branding and relentless ambition. Rather than celebrating celebrity, the new Singapore musical explores the emotional and ethical price of success and whether staying true to yourself is the greatest achievement of all.

Adapted from Lost in Transit, a 45-minute musical first presented in 2005 during Musical Theatre Ltd’s inaugural Five Foot Broadway showcase, Be A Star has evolved into a full-length 90-minute production for a new generation. The expanded work reunites original creators Stella Kon and Desmond Moey while welcoming writer-director Gavin Low and music director Elaine Chan, creating a collaboration that bridges more than two decades of Singapore theatre.

The story follows Mia, a gifted 19-year-old village singer whose extraordinary voice offers her an escape from a simple life. When an opportunity arises to perform with the glamorous Kissy Club in the city, she leaves behind her grandmother and fiancé Sam in pursuit of a dream she has always believed was meant for her.

But fame comes with conditions. As Mia’s star begins to rise, she finds herself caught between genuine artistic mentorship and an entertainment industry that seeks to profit from her talent at any cost. Faced with manipulation, exploitation and impossible choices, she must decide whether success is worth sacrificing the very person she set out to become. Rather than offering a conventional rise-to-fame narrative, Be A Star explores themes of ambition, power, conscience and resilience, topics that feel increasingly universal beyond the performing arts.

One of the production’s biggest draws is the creative team behind it. Legendary playwright Stella Kon, whose Emily of Emerald Hill remains one of Singapore’s defining theatrical works, returns to revisit one of her earlier musical collaborations. Working alongside veteran composer Desmond Moey, acclaimed theatre director Gavin Low, and celebrated arranger and composer Elaine Chan, best known for composing the National Day Parade favourite Reach Out for the Skies, the production becomes a conversation between generations of Singapore artists about how stories continue to evolve.

Produced by Musical Theatre Limited (MTL), the musical also reflects the charity’s long-standing philosophy of “Art for Society’s Sake.” Beyond staging original productions, MTL is known for bringing musical performances into nursing homes, care facilities and community spaces across Singapore while running arts education programmes throughout the year. That broader mission shapes Be A Star, positioning theatre not only as entertainment but as a catalyst for reflection, empathy and conversation.
