Singapore Repertory Theatre and the Esplanade will be restaging one of Singapore’s most successful original musicals this August with Forbidden City: Portrait of an Empress. With three sold-out runs and over 100,000 tickets sold, this epic musical returns for fans and those who missed out on a chance to see it, promising to be the cultural event of the year.
Forbidden City follows the story of real-life legend Empress Dowager Cixi, with local star Kit Chan in the lead role and Cheryl Tan as the young imperial concubine, Yehenara, while Malaysian artist Cheryl Tan will play the young Yehanara. Other cast members include West End star Earl Carpenter (Les Misérables) and Broadway star Stephanie Leigh (Mary Poppins) as well as Singapore’s very own Broadway Beng – Sebastian Tan.
Featuring an unforgettable soundtrack written by Cultural Medallion winner Dick Lee, as well as countless elaborate costumes and an iconic set, this musical of epic proportions will immerse audiences in the annals of history and mesmerize with its deep tale of secrets, betrayals and rise to power, and the haunting obsession to find the truth.
