If you think your family’s weird, wait till you meet the Addams Family. Mediacorp Vizpro is bringing the world’s kookiest, spookiest family back to Singapore this November and you’re invited to meet the whole clan!
First conceived as a series of comics, The Addams Family steadily grew from its humble roots to being adapted to multiple animated and live action TV series, and of course, the films starring celebrated actors like Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston. Now, come witness their family antics in an exciting musical romp with the UK touring cast, and watch things take a turn for the macabre as you laugh, cry and sing along to the most delightfully ghoulish show of the year.
We grabbed a few words with cast members Cameron Blakely, who will be playing patriarch of the family Gomez Addams, and Carrie Hope Fletcher, who will be playing daughter and princess of darkness herself Wednesday Addams. Check out the interviews below!
Cameron Blakely
BCM: You were last in Singapore when you played Thenardier in Les Miserables, which stirred up a little controversy. Is there anything risque that Gomez gets up to in the Addams Family that the censors should watch out for?
Cameron: Nothing risqué from Gomez!
BCM: What’s your own history with The Addams Family like? Did you grow up watching the TV series, and who is your favourite character?
Cameron: I loved the films starring Raul Julia and Angelica Houston, who play Gomez and Morticia respectively. Needless to say, my favourite character is Gomez!
BCM: As dark as they are, the Addams family is still a happy, quirky little family unit. What’s your own favourite family memory?
Cameron: 1976. Going to California with my parents and brothers. It was a magical time.
BCM: Given that you were probably pretty busy last time you came to Singapore, is there any place you’d like to visit this time around or food you’d like to try?
Cameron: I would try your national fruit again in another challenge! Looking forward to taking the family to the gardens by the bay again! And of course, Universal Studios.
Carrie Hope Fletcher
BCM: Wednesday Addams is used to torturing her little brother, while you have an older brother [Tom Fletcher, from McFly] who you seem to share an amazingly happy siblingship with. Yet, both you and Wednesday Addams both seem to have grown up in happy families, albeit in very different ways. What’s the secret to having a happy family?
Carrie: Morticia and Gomez have it spot on. Being honest and open is the key to being able to trust and feel safe and secure with your family and loved ones and making sure that potentially taboo subjects are talked about!
BCM: The London theatre scene is tough and extremely competitive, and you’ve been quite blessed and already played big roles like Eponine in Les Miserables. What draws you to audition for certain roles? What do you attribute your success thus far to?
Carrie: I always love a challenge and something that takes me a little bit outside my comfort zone which Wednesday has certainly done more so than most. However, success for me has never been about how big the role is, how much I’ll be paid or how it will further my career. It’s in how much fun I’ve had and the memories I’ve made along the way and in that respect I am definitely successful.
BCM: Theatre affords you the opportunity to literally be someone else for a few hours each night. Could you ever imagine yourself doing anything other than theatre? If so, what might that be?
Carrie: Aside from being an actress, I’m also an author but both are all about storytelling which is something I could never be without. If I ever had another job, it would have to be connected with telling stories in some way.
BCM: Will this be the first time you’ll be in Singapore? Is there any particular place you’re looking forward to visiting or food you’d like to try?
Carrie: I’ve heard a lot about Gardens by the Bay! I’m looking forward to going there and seeing the lights!
