Singapore’s biggest free alternative festival is back this August! Once again, the Esplanade plays host to the annual Baybeats festival. Now in its 17th year, expect to hear the hottest up and coming local and regional bands come down for a weekend of nonstop musical action.
Besides the gigs, this year’s Baybeats keeps things fresh with two brand new music experiences. First off, Baybeats and the EMONIGHTSG crew are collaborating for the first time to take over the Esplanade Annexe Studio with late night parties spinning alternative music throughout the night. This year’s Baybeats will also be featuring an increased number of hip hop and rap artists, ranging from Singapore’s Akeem Jahat and Yung Raja x Fariz Jabba, to Malaysia’s Zamaera.
This will also mark the final year Baybeats will be featuring the Powerhouse Stage along the Esplanade Waterfront, as construction begins on the new mid-sized theatre in 2019. To give the stage a last hurrah, several Singapore bands who have previously performed on the Powerhouse Stage will be returning to rock out, specifically, Caracal, Wormrot and The Full Pledge Munkees, in addition to Indonesia’s Superman is Dead and Hundredth (USA) who will be making their Singapore debuts there.
Beyond the performances, Baybeats continues to nurture rising Singaporean alent through its various Baybeats Budding initiatives. This year, six bands were selected for the Baybeats Budding Bands mentorship programme, and went through a three month long mentorship by industry veterans. Trust The Chaos, Glassmouth, Osr313, Dreebsby, Coming Up Roses and Sangriento will then be making their debut at Baybeats 2018.
Meanwhile, the Baybeats Budding Editorial Programme unites five Budding Photographers and six Budding Writers together to provide coverage on Baybeats, helping promote music journalism in Singapore. This programme will be mentored by photographer Aloysius Lim, as well as music journalists Eddino Abdul Hadi and Daniel Peters, and photos and articles will appear on Esplanade’s web and social channels. As for the Baybeats Budding Video Artists Programme, two groups of final-year students from LASALLE College of the Arts’ Diploma in Broadcast Media have produced three videos which give a peek at what some of Baybeats Budding Bands alumni are up to.
Join Baybeats 2018 as they launch a weekend of the best alternative beats, and celebrate our ever-growing, thriving music scene. Who knows? You might just discover you new favourite band here.
