4 decades is a long time to be making music, and come January 2019, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra will be celebrating their 40th anniversary with a gala concert featuring the meditative mysteries of Ives’ The Unanswered Question and the majestic strides of Beethoven’s Emperor Piano Concerto, significant for being two of the pieces played at their inaugural concert back on 24th January 1979.
That concert was conducted by their first Music Director Choo Hoey, while the concert will also be paying tribute to Leong Yoon Pin (1932 – 2011), the most important of Singapore’s pioneering composers, whose Dayong Sampan Overture was the first Singaporean composition ever played by the SSO.
The concerto soloist for the 40th Anniversary Gala will be Singaporean pianist Lim Yan, a good and proper introduction to his attaining the position of new Artistic Director of the Singapore International Piano Festival, while the concert will be conducted by SSO outgoing Music Director Lan Shui, in his penultimate concert in that role. Get ready for an evening that showcases the best of the SSO as they pay tribute to their past and celebrate 40 long years of quality music.
SSO 40th Anniversary Gala takes place on 18th January 2019 at the Esplanade Concert Hall. Tickets available here
