10 years ago, leading local theatre company The Necessary Stage (TNS) started their Theatre for Seniors (TFS) programme, a platform for pioneers and older citizens to find a creative and educational space to learn and perform theatre. Now, TFS has come into its own as a professional theatre group, and this year, will present a brand new production jointly devised and performed by seniors.
Says Alvin Tan, Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage and Founder of TFS: “Theatre is contagious, and it brings people together in the process of creating a show. The seniors are immersed in a creation process where they have become coauthors of the work from beginning to the end.”
Titled It Takes All Kinds, developed in collaboration with Setagaya Public Theatre from Tokyo over a series of devising sessions, the play promises heartwarming tales based on real-life experiences and perspectives that explores the love in our families, covering issues as far ranging as conflict resolution to even when those closes tot us bid our final goodbyes.
Says director Serena Ho, who has been amazed by the varied experiences she’s heard from these seniors and the seniors’ commitment to their work and theatre: “The discovery never stops for me. As people, how different are we? And through working with them, we’ve learnt that we are not so different after all.”
Starring Elsie Tan, Freddy Lim, Irene Ong, Jessie Seng, Kathleen Neo Ai Lian, Michael Tan, Ong Suchzeng, Nicholas Cheong, Padma Sagaram, Terri Chua, Thomas Lim and William Hiu, come join TFS and find out the many recipes for a successful family, and as you savour the ones presented to you, perhaps, you too might discover and rediscover your own.
