Impressing us when we visited it at the Georgetown Festival last year, Penangite photographer David ST Loh’s Over Penang + Beyond photography exhibition makes its way to Singapore this July, exhibiting a series of aerial photographs at The Fullerton Hotel.
After 30 years abroad, David returned to Penang in November 2017 as a homecoming of a sorts. Exploring the island with a revived and renewed passion for his hometown, he took photos of it from new perspectives and angles, using aerial photography to uncover Penang in all its vibrant, historical and fascinating facets. Using a drone, David scours places that might hold interesting terrain, landmarks and features, capturing the multiracial society of Penang from the images of the altar table on the eve of the Hokkien New Year, the devotees and offerings during Thaipusam, and the pilgrims at St Anne’s Church.
David was formerly based in Singapore for over two decades, as a photojournalist and editor with Reuters Global Pictures desk in Science Park, and has always viewed things with a keen eye for details and balance. As a photojournalist, he sees himself as a messenger who observe, captures and brings back engaging images to the public. “It brings me great joy to be able photograph and show images of places that even the locals never knew existed,” says David. “My mission is to get the shot that tells a story. One that gives you a new and novel way of seeing things around you.”
To get a glimpse of Penang from on high, be sure to catch Over Penang + Beyond at the Fullerton Hotel Singapore this July.
Over Penang + Beyond runs from 1st to 31st July 2019 at Fullerton Heritage, East Garden, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore. For more information on David ST Loh, visit his Facebook here
