While some local theatre companies are busy streaming their archived performances, others are presenting live readings or performances, as the circuit breaker continues. For the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT), the local theatre company continues to curate and create online content for audiences at home via their social media platforms.
The newest of these initiatives is SRT’s Made in Singapore series, in which local writers and local actors come together to present work. The first of these takes the form of a rehearsed reading of Dora Tan’s play A Wedding, A Funeral and Lucky the Fish, set to be live streamed on Facebook tonight at 8pm. The play was originally staged in March 2014 under SRT’s Stage Two (SRT’s division that develops and stages original work), and part of a dedicated playwright incubator programme with esteemed playwright David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly, Flower Drum Song) as mentor.
In the rehearsed reading, watch as Seraphina brings her Caucasian boyfriend Alistair back to Singapore. Little does Alistair know that this is no ordinary trip, as they’re not stopping by for tea, but a full on wedding tea ceremony! But when the couple arrives, Sera makes a discovery so shocking, it might just stop the wedding. As each family member discovers the secret one by one, just how long can they keep things under wraps before everything blows apart?
Touted as absurd, funny and poignant, this rehearsed reading of A Wedding, A Funeral & Lucky, the Fish reunites original director Samantha Scott-Blackhall with the original cast of Amy Cheng, Isabella Chiam, Daniel Jenkins and Catherine Sng. Audience members can also catch director Samantha Scott-Blackhall and writer Dora Tan in an interview set to take place 10 minutes before the reading, at 7.50pm.
Besides the Made in Singapore series, SRT has also invited actors from their previous Shakespeare in the Park productions to contribute Shakespeare Monologues on Facebook every Thursday, SRT has also created a resource page for parents, capitalising on materials from their Little Company productions to use as fun activities with younger children.
For now though, stay home, sit back and relax as SRT presents the rehearsed reading of A Wedding, A Funeral & Lucky, the Fish on Facebook live tonight, and get ready to laugh and cry as one family’s secrets threaten to change their lives forever.
The rehearsed reading of A Wedding, A Funeral and Lucky the Fish will be streamed live on Facebook on 1st May 2020, at 8pm. For more information, visit their event page here
The live stream will include sign language interpretation designed to cater for Deaf or Hard of Hearing patrons. The interpreter will sign all auditory elements of the show using Singapore Sign Language.
