Preview: A Tapestry of Sacred Music 2026 by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Presented by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, A Tapestry of Sacred Music returns for its 17th edition from 30 April to 3 May 2026, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience the rich diversity of sacred musical traditions from Singapore and around the world.

Once again, the festivals offers up an immersive journey across spiritual landscapes spanning mosques, temples, village grounds, and cathedrals, where devotional art forms are shared in their many vibrant expressions. At its heart, the festival is guided by a deeper purpose: to foster understanding and connection across cultures and beliefs through the universal language of music.

This year’s programme presents a compelling array of performances rooted in diverse histories and geographies. To open the festival, from West Africa, the mesmerising Kumpo masquerade of The Gambia showcases a sacred village guardian figure, brought to life through rhythmic movement and elaborate attire of dried palm leaves.

Elsewhere, the powerful tradition of Pakistani qawwali comes alive through the performances of Rizwan and Muazzam Ali Khan, heirs to a centuries-old Sufi musical lineage, evoking the atmosphere of a spiritual shrine.

Audiences can encounter the ritualistic depth of Japanese noh theatre through the Kurokawa tradition, historically performed in devotion to the deities of the Kasuga shrine, as masked performers revive the ancient tale of Shojo (The Sake Sprite), a festive yet reverent offering about an alcohol-loving sea spirit who rewards a wine-seller with boundless sake.

The soaring polyphonic chants of Corsican vocal traditions highlight the enduring spiritual heritage of Mediterranean sacred music, as Spartimu, one of the most celebrated vocal ensembles on the island, brings forth the sacred tradition of cantu in paghjella. Shaped by faith, geography, and centuries of oral transmission, their unaccompanied harmonies move beyond performance to create an authentic sound that reflects their idyllic life.

From Thailand’s Isaan region, ceremonial music designed to dispel illness brings a vibrant, rhythmic energy that celebrates healing and communal joy, in the presence of ancestral and sky spirits, and among kin. As the ceremony unfolds, what starts out as solemn and foreboding shifts into joyful revelry.

Across these varied expressions, audiences may find themselves moved by unfamiliar languages yet deeply familiar emotions—moments of awe, reverence, joy, and introspection that transcend cultural boundaries.

In a time when global discourse is often marked by division, amplified by technology and the rapid spread of polarising narratives, the festival offers a timely counterpoint. It invites audiences to pause and reflect on what unites humanity, shared emotions, aspirations, and the enduring search for meaning, expressed through sacred sound and performance.

A Tapestry of Sacred Music stands as a reminder that while beliefs and traditions may differ, the human experience they express is profoundly shared. Through sound, movement, and ritual, the festival creates spaces where connection is felt beyond words. As audiences journey through its performances, they are invited to witness cultural treasures and reflect on their own place within a broader human story. The festival leaves behind more than memories of music; it offers a renewed sense of kinship, affirming that even in a divided world, there remains far more that unites than separates.

A Tapestry of Sacred Music 2026 runs from 30th April to 3rd May 2026 at the Esplanade. Full programme and tickets available here
