Visual Art: Hyundai Motor Group Opens Applications for the 7th VH AWARD, Expanding Opportunities for Emerging Media Artists Across Asia

Emerging media artists exploring the complexities, cultures and contemporary realities of Asia now have a new opportunity to bring their ideas to the global stage. Hyundai Motor Group has officially launched the open call for the 7th VH AWARD, inviting artists from across Asia and its diasporas to submit proposals between 26 May and 21 July 2026. Since its inception in 2016, the award has become one of the region’s most significant platforms for experimental media art, championing voices that engage with the diverse social, cultural and historical contexts of Asia.

Over the years, the VH AWARD has helped spotlight artists whose work challenges conventions, sparks dialogue and pushes the boundaries of audiovisual storytelling. This latest edition continues that mission while introducing several new initiatives designed to provide even greater support for emerging talent.

For its seventh edition, the VH AWARD is expanding its commitment to nurturing artists throughout their creative journey. Five finalists will be selected through the open call and awarded production grants to create new commissioned works. They will also participate in an enhanced online residency programme developed in partnership with Ars Electronica, the renowned media art institution based in Linz, Austria. The programme will feature masterclasses, workshops and mentorship opportunities aimed at supporting artistic development and international exchange.

A notable addition this year is the introduction of an Honorary Mention category, recognising a broader range of promising artists whose practices demonstrate exceptional potential. Those selected will also gain access to selected components of the residency programme, extending valuable learning and networking opportunities beyond the finalist group.

According to DooEun Choi, Art Director at Hyundai Motor, the award has evolved into a distinctive platform for artists examining pressing contemporary issues through media art. “The VH AWARD has evolved as a distinctive platform for emerging media artists from across Asia and its diasporas to address critical contemporary issues,” Choi said. “With broadened partnerships with institutions and enhanced opportunities for applicants, the 7th edition invites artists to explore the potential of audiovisual art, creating works that transcend disciplinary and cultural boundaries.”

The programme will culminate in June 2027, when one artist will be awarded the Grand Prix, receiving an additional US$30,000 to support future artistic projects and research.

The impact of the VH AWARD extends well beyond the competition itself. The five commissioned finalist works will be showcased through an international exhibition programme, reaching audiences across some of the world’s leading art platforms.

Planned presentations include:

  • Hyundai Motor Group’s Vision Hall in Yongin, South Korea
  • HEK (House of Electronic Arts) in Basel, Switzerland
  • Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria
  • Singapore Art Week 2028

By connecting emerging artists with major cultural institutions and international audiences, the VH AWARD continues to position itself as a vital platform for contemporary media art rooted in Asian perspectives while engaging with global conversations.

Applications for the 7th VH AWARD are now open until 21 July 2026. Artists interested in participating can find submission details and eligibility requirements on the official VH AWARD website.
