Preview: The Nether by HuM Theatre

What happens when virtual reality blurs the line between fantasy and crime? This July, audiences are invited to step into a world where technology challenges our deepest moral instincts. The Nether, Jennifer Haley’s internationally acclaimed sci-fi thriller, makes its Singapore debut at the Esplanade Theatre Studio from 8 to 12 July 2026, offering an immersive theatrical experience that is as gripping as it is thought-provoking.

Adapted for Singapore audiences by Subin Subaiah and presented by HuM Theatre Ltd, The Nether unfolds in a near future where virtual reality has become almost indistinguishable from real life. When a murder in the physical world appears connected to actions inside a hidden virtual realm known as “The Hideaway”, an investigation begins that forces everyone involved, and the audience, to grapple with unsettling questions about consent, accountability, and the limits of human desire.

More than a psychological thriller, The Nether explores issues that feel increasingly relevant in today’s digital world. As technology continues to evolve faster than legislation and ethics can keep pace, the production asks: if anything is possible in a virtual space, where should society draw the line?

Adding another layer of significance is HuM Theatre’s collaboration with PAVE, one of Singapore’s leading organisations supporting survivors of family violence and children affected by sexual abuse. Rather than simply presenting difficult subject matter, the production aims to encourage meaningful public dialogue around these issues.

Every performance will conclude with a post-show discussion featuring counsellors from PAVE, giving audiences the opportunity to unpack the themes of the play and explore how they resonate with real-world challenges. It’s a rare chance for theatre to move beyond entertainment and become the starting point for important conversations.

The production also brings together an accomplished creative team. Produced by Daisy Irani Subaiah and directed by Yogesh Tadwalkar, the duo behind the acclaimed Train to Pakistan, the play features a multi-racial cast including Sharda Harrison, Andrew Lua, Ahmad Wan, Janine Ng and Subin Subaiah.

Visually immersive, emotionally intense and intellectually provocative, The Nether is the kind of production that lingers long after the curtain falls. Whether you’re drawn to futuristic thrillers, compelling crime dramas or theatre that tackles contemporary social issues, this is one show that promises to spark conversation well beyond the auditorium. Some performances entertain. Others challenge the way we think. The Nether aims to do both.

The Nether plays from 8th to 12th July 2026 at the Esplanade Theatre Studio. Tickets available from
