What happens when one of the oldest love stories in the Western canon is told from the woman’s point of view? This September, Malaysian audiences can find out as Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre (JCPAC) presents Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice, a bold, funny and ultimately heartbreaking reimagining of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.

Directed by award-winning theatre-maker Ghafir Akbar, the production runs from 18–27 September 2026 at The Studio, JCPAC, bringing together a formidable ensemble of Malaysian theatre talent. At the centre of it all is Vinna Law as Eurydice, marking her long-awaited return to the Malaysian stage after building her career in London. She is joined by Tinesh Janaki Raman as Orpheus, with stage veterans Gavin Yap and Terence Swampillai taking on the roles of the Lord of the Underworld / Man and Eurydice’s Father respectively. Adding a mischievous energy to the Underworld are Jo Kukathas, Anne James and Sukania Venugopal, who play the trio of Stones.

Behind the scenes, Akbar’s production brings together a similarly accomplished creative team, with Melissa Teoh designing the set, Joanne Ooi handling set and props, Ee Chee Wei on lighting, Irena Taib composing the music and designing the sound, Putrina Rafie as assistant music composer, and Theresa Chan designing the costumes.

The show follows the myth of Eurydice, who dies tragically young on her wedding day and finds herself swept into a strange, watery underworld. There, she is reunited with her father and confronted with the strange rules of a world where the dead gradually forget the lives they once knew. But this is no sombre journey through grief. Ruhl’s acclaimed play is as playful and surreal as it is moving, filling the ancient myth with contemporary characters, mischievous humour and theatrical invention. The result is a world where stones can speak, the Underworld has its own eccentric logic, and the boundaries between memory, love and loss become increasingly blurred.

First premiered Off-Broadway, Eurydice has earned acclaim for the way it turns a familiar myth into something intimate, strange and deeply human. Rather than focusing solely on Orpheus’ legendary descent into the Underworld, Ruhl asks what happens to Eurydice; her memories, her identity and her relationship with her father, after she crosses over.

Performed in the intimate 150-seat Studio at JCPAC, this production offers audiences a chance to experience Ruhl’s imaginative world up close, with a cast that brings together some of Malaysia’s most distinctive theatre voices. Watch Eurydice for a story about love and grief, but also about memory; what we choose to hold on to, what we are forced to forget, and the impossibility of saying goodbye.
