This June, da:ns focus – Ballet by the Bay marks a long-awaited homecoming as Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay welcomes The Royal Ballet back to Singapore for the first time in over two decades. Following the company’s last visit in 2005, this return is both a celebration and a renewal—an encounter with one of the world’s most revered ballet institutions, whose legacy continues to be shaped by the living artistry of its dancers, choreographers, and audiences across generations. It is a meeting of memory and the present moment, where tradition is not preserved in stillness, but carried forward through performance.
Specially curated for Singapore audiences by Director Kevin O’Hare, The Royal Ballet Gala will be the company’s first official gala performance in Singapore. Featuring more than 30 dancers, including many of the company’s principal artists, the programme showcases the full creative range of the company’s repertory—from the enduring lyricism of 19th-century classical ballet, such as excerpts from Swan Lake, to neo-classical and contemporary works by the company’s past and present associated choreographers, including Frederick Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan, Wayne McGregor, and Christopher Wheeldon. Together, these works reflect a company defined by theatrical brilliance, stylistic versatility, and a deep commitment to both heritage and innovation.
This return builds on an ongoing relationship between Esplanade and The Royal Ballet. In 2021, as part of the da:ns series, The Royal Ballet on Film offered audiences a vital connection to the global ballet stage during a period when live performance was largely out of reach. In the years since, sustained dialogue and planning have led to this long-anticipated live presentation—affirming the belief that ballet is ultimately an art form best experienced in the shared space between dancers and audiences.
Beyond the stage, Ballet by the Bay opens windows into the processes that shape performance. Audiences can gain rare insight through Royal Ballet in Rehearsal, a well-loved engagement programme from the company’s home at the Royal Opera House in London, offering a glimpse into daily training and the intricate work behind each production. Complementing this are programmes that extend ballet into public and communal spaces—from new commissions by local artists to Ballet 101, an interactive introduction to the language of choreography that invites audiences to discover how movement is made.
In a time when dance is often encountered through fleeting digital fragments, Ballet by the Bay reaffirms the irreplaceable power of live performance: shared breath, collective attention, and the quiet thrill of witnessing artistry unfold in real time. Whether reconnecting with a beloved company or experiencing ballet live for the first time, audiences are invited into a weekend that honours ballet not as a fixed tradition, but as a living, evolving art form—rooted in history, alive in the present, and open to all.
The Royal Ballet Gala plays from 26th to 28th June 2026 at the Esplanade Theatre. Tickets available here
