More than three decades after Michael Jackson brought his Dangerous World Tour to Singapore, the King of Pop’s music and creative legacy are set to return to the city, this time on the stage.

MJ The Michael Jackson Musical, the four-time Tony Award-winning Broadway production, will open for a limited season at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, in August 2027, giving Singapore audiences the chance to experience one of the world’s most acclaimed musical productions about one of pop music’s most influential figures.

For Singapore, the arrival carries an added sense of nostalgia. Jackson performed two sold-out concerts here in 1993 as part of his Dangerous World Tour, the very tour that provides the backdrop for the musical. Presented in Singapore by Base Entertainment Asia, the production has already been seen by more than 8 million people worldwide, with acclaimed productions across Broadway, London’s West End and Hamburg, as well as tours across the United States and Australia.

Now, Singapore gets its turn. But if you are expecting a straightforward jukebox musical, MJ offers something rather more ambitious. Set in 1992, the production takes audiences behind the scenes of the creation of the Dangerous World Tour, exploring the enormous creative undertaking behind one of Jackson’s most iconic concert productions.

Written by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, known for Ruined and Sweat, the musical looks beyond the legendary dance moves and global hits to explore Jackson’s artistry, ambition and collaborative creative process. The story unfolds through the perspective of an MTV journalist who is given rare access to the rehearsal room, offering a glimpse into the intense process of transforming Jackson’s vision from an idea into a global stage spectacle.

And, naturally, the soundtrack is a major part of the experience. The production features more than 25 of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits, including Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Man in the Mirror and Thriller.

For director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon OBE, one of the central challenges was capturing what made Jackson such an extraordinary performer without simply recreating his most famous moments. “Michael Jackson transformed the relationship between music and movement in a way few artists ever have. With MJ, we wanted to honour not only the songs audiences know and love, but also the artistry, innovation and creative spirit behind them. The production brings to life a pivotal moment in Michael’s career and celebrates the enduring impact of his work on generations of artists and audiences.”

That approach has clearly resonated with audiences and critics alike. The production has earned praise for its high-energy performances, innovative storytelling and choreography, with the original production winning four Tony Awards, including Best Choreography for Wheeldon. Wheeldon also received the Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreography for the London West End production.

The Singapore season could prove particularly meaningful for audiences who remember Jackson’s 1993 concerts firsthand. But the production is also designed to connect with a younger generation who never had the opportunity to see the superstar perform live.

That cross-generational appeal is part of what makes the Singapore arrival especially timely, according to Chantal Prudhomme, Presenter and Chief Executive Officer of Base Entertainment Asia. “Michael Jackson has been part of the soundtrack of so many of our lives, and bringing MJ The Michael Jackson Musical, to Singapore is a real thrill. For those who had the chance to see him perform, there is something nostalgic about seeing his music and signature choreography brought to life on stage again. For those who never had that opportunity, this is perhaps the closest they will come to experiencing the energy and magic of Michael Jackson live, while also being taken through the story of the man himself. That combination makes MJ a remarkable piece of musical theatre, with something to connect with across generations.”

In other words, the musical is not only about revisiting Jackson’s music. It is about revisiting a moment in pop culture, while introducing that moment to people who experienced it only through recordings, videos and stories.

The scale of MJ extends well beyond its performances. The creative team includes Derek McLane, a Tony Award and two-time Emmy Award winner, on scenic design; Natasha Katz, a six-time Tony Award winner, on lighting design; and Paul Tazewell, winner of Tony, Emmy and Academy Awards, on costume design. Gareth Owen, a Tony and Olivier Award winner, leads sound design, while projection design comes from two-time Tony Award nominee Peter Nigrini.

The wider team includes hair and wig designer Charles LaPointe, make-up designer Joe Dulude II, musical supervisor David Holcenberg, and orchestrators and arrangers David Holcenberg and Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb. Together, they recreate not simply the look of a Michael Jackson concert, but the machinery, imagination and theatrical ambition behind it.

The Singapore season will be a limited run at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, in August 2027, with exact performance dates and further details to be announced. For a city that once welcomed Michael Jackson at the height of the Dangerous era, his story returning to Singapore in musical form feels like more than another major touring production. It is a chance to hear those songs again, see those unmistakable movements brought back to the stage, and revisit the creative world behind an artist who changed the relationship between pop music, performance and spectacle.

And for anyone who was not there in 1993, August 2027 might offer the next best thing.
